Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need referral from my doctor for this test?
A: Yes, for the 24hr Holter (7 Day Holter ECG Monitoring) test to access the Medicare rebate (bulk billing is available for Holter). No referral needed for the 24hr BP monitor test as this is not covered by Medicare.

Q: Can I shower with the monitor on?
A: No, please do not get the monitor wet.

Q: Do I need to press any buttons on the blood pressure monitor?
A: No do not press any buttons. Simply wear the monitor and take it off 24hrs later.

Q: The blood pressure cuff is pumping up many times to take just one reading. Why?
A: Stop what you are doing. Try to relax and lower your arm, ensuring your arm is not bent upwards. A bent arm will impair the ability of the device to take readings and may result in the monitor taking numerous attempts to get one reading. If your blood pressure is elevated, the device may also take numerous attempts to obtain a reading, this is normal.

Q: Is it normal for my arm to be sore whilst wearing the monitor?
A: Some slight discomfort around the area where the cuff is positioned on your arm is normal. Especially if the device has had to take numerous attempts to obtain a reading. Wear the monitor for as long as you can comfortably tolerate. If necessary, take it off the blood pressure cuff to end the test.

Q: How long will it take to get my results?
A: At most, results will be with your doctor within three working days of the monitor being returned.

Q. How much will the test cost?
A. Bulk billing is available for Holter (including up to 7 day Holter) monitors. To enable bulk billing, please bring your Medicare card with you and the request form to the appointment. No Medicare rebate exists for 24hr blood pressure monitoring, test cost is $120. All fees must be paid at the time of the monitor fitting.

Q. How do I return the monitor?
A. Patients are shown how to easily remove the equipment themselves, pack it into a pouch provided and return it after the test is complete, to the location it was fitted.
